Politics Reporter, Virginia
The American Independent News Network, a nonpartisan, nonprofit news organization, seeks a reporter/blogger to cover Virginia politics for the national political news site, AmericanIndependent.com.
The successful candidate will closely cover political issues of the day, with a focus on the U.S. Senate race and an eye to breaking stories and impacting the public debate. The individual will work with the TAI editor, in coordination with AINN’s national editorial staff. The reporter will be expected to produce at least 3-4 posts a day, featuring a combination of reported blog posts and longer-form (approx. 800-word) articles.
The ideal candidate will have at least 2 years of reporting/blogging experience and will have an intimate knowledge of politics, players and issues within the state. The position is full-time equivalent contract position for 12 months, with the possibility of renewal.
The role’s key criteria for success is generating “impact journalism,” with reporting that demonstrably impacts the public debate and advances the common good. The Independent’s staff achieves this goal through a combination of aggressive reporting and tenacious, insightful blogging.
Travel throughout the state will be required.

Politics Reporter, The New Mexico Independent
The New Mexico Independent is seeking a Reporter/Blogger to closely cover local and statewide politics and key issues of the day, with an eye to breaking news and shaping the public debate. The ideal candidate will have experience in online journalism and a demonstrated knowledge of state politics and policy. The individual will work with the American Independent News Network’s national editorial staff.
This is a part-time equivalent contract with a monthly stipend of $1,000/month.
The role’s key criteria for success is generating “impact journalism,” with reporting that demonstrably affects the public debate and advances the common good. The Independent’s staff achieves this goal through a combination of aggressive reporting and tenacious, insightful blogging.
Responsibilities include:
- Report and write at least 2-3 posts a day, featuring a combination of reported blog posts and longer-form (approx. 800-word) articles.
- Drive an effective news agenda that captures the attention of elected officials, key decision-makers and other influentials.
- Develop, report and write individual stories that speak to AINN’s mission of impact journalism.
- Help promote the work and staff as needed with outreach team.
- This position reports to AINN’s Managing Editor.

Editorial Assistants, The American Independent
The American Independent News Network (AINN), which investigates and disseminates news that impacts public debate and advances the common good, is seeking Online Editorial Assistants for The American Independent (TAI).
Assistants will be required to: blog/report for TAI and our online news sites; develop a political knowledge base in select areas of the country; take responsibility for updating the site; send out a daily newsletter; learn how to format and reconvert documents, images, video and more for the web.
Assistants are encouraged to work from AINN’s offices Washington, D.C., though telecommuting is an option for any applicant that cannot relocate.
Program duration is three months. Upon successful completion, assistants will be awarded a $750 stipend and will have earned the following:
- Bylined blog clips
- Experience working in an online newsroom and launching a new website
- Ability to use WordPress online publishing system
- Skills related to online conversion of multimedia materials
- A political beat
- Online research skills
Additionally, this three-month program carries the possibility of extension.
Candidates should possess an interest in news and politics, with or without a journalism or research background. Familiarity with online journalism, online research, WordPress, social networking sites, and online multimedia and web page construction a plus.

Web Development Intern
The American Independent News Network is excited to announce a web development internship for someone interested in gaining experience creating, deploying and maintaining websites and associated technologies. Supervised by AINN’s Web Developer, the intern will assist with technical tasks including, but not limited to: server administration; desktop, mobile site and wiki maintenance, development and design; user experience testing; graphic design work; social media integration; and general technical research.
Our ideal candidate will have a solid, working knowledge of HTML, CSS and PHP. Experience with Linux, Photoshop, XML, Javascript, object-oriented programming languages, relational databases and/or WordPress will also be helpful, but is not required. This is a fantastic opportunity to learn and to get hands-on experience in a lot of different web-based technologies. And because we work in a modern media environment that continuously changes, we expect that our interns will have good organizational and communication skills. Also, an interest in new media and politics is encouraged but not mandatory.

Development Intern
AINN is seeking a development intern for 15-30 hours a week for the fall, spring, and summer semesters.
The development intern job tasks include: Become familiar with our nine news sites and our donors issue-area interest; identify key stories that would be of interest to donors; draft email alerts for President / CEO to approve for circulation to donors; research / map out a plan for usage of and implementation of fundraising software; assist Development and Outreach Manager with special projects as necessary.
The ideal candidate will possess: Strong writing and editorial skills; strong attention to details; high degree of flexibility; ability to juggle multiple tasks and easy going. Desired (but not necessary) qualifications include: Experience working with MAC platforms; strong research skills; strong interest in media.

Outreach Intern

Editor/Reporter
The Texas Independent seeks an editor/reporter to cover Texas politics, including — but not limited to — education, LGBT, reproductive rights and immigration policy, and with an eye on the state’s role in the 2012 election.
The successful candidate will closely cover local and statewide issues with the aim to break stories and regularly put together aggressive investigative pieces that focus on accountability in the public realm. The individual will also supervise and edit the work of two current reporters in the state, in coordination with AINN’s national editorial staff.
The ideal candidate will have at least 2 years experience reporting and editing news, preferably online, and will have an intimate knowledge of politics, players and issues within the state. The position is on a contract basis.
The role’s key criteria for success is generating “impact journalism,” with reporting that demonstrably affects the public debate and advances the common good. The Texas Independent’s staff achieves this goal through a combination of aggressive reporting and tenacious, insightful blogging.
Responsibilities include:
- Report and write at least 2-3 posts a day, featuring a combination of reported blog posts and longer-form (approx. 800-word) articles.
- Drive an effective news agenda that captures the attention of elected officials, key decision-makers and other influentials.
- Develop, assign and edit individual stories that speak to AINN’s mission of impact journalism.
- Edit articles and blog posts throughout the news cycle in coordination with national editorial team.
- Manage political reporter(s) and blogger(s), tracking their story development, mission focus, and productivity.
- Help promote the work and staff as needed with outreach team.
- Proficiency in Spanish is a plus but not required.
This position reports to the Managing Editor of AmericanIndependent.com and AINN’s Senior Editor.
